Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Photographs bodies and human remains during examination in the autopsy suite, including photographs of body surfaces, wounds and injuries, and internal organs and body cavities.
  • Photographs retained tissue specimens and organs.
  • Photographs evidence including personal effects, clothing, projectiles, foreign objects, and other items deemed of evidentiary significance.
  • Maintains electronic photo archives and uploads photographs to the appropriate locations in the electronic database of the West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center.
  • Processes images in multiple file types using a variety of software tools for investigative, scientific, and court presentation purposes.
  • Provides hands-on training to new and current employees on department specific photography techniques.
  • Assists with autopsy operations and maintenance as directed by the Autopsy Technician Supervisor including body processing, autopsy setup, entering case and evidence information into the database, and assisting with ancillary and non-autopsy tasks.
  • Maintains all photographic equipment used by the Forensic Center including troubleshooting, inventory control, and functionality.
  • Remains up to date on the latest forensic photography techniques and standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
  • EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience/training in forensic or medical photography. (Experience working in a medical examiner’s office performing digital or conventional photography, or International Association for Identification - Forensic Photography Certification is preferred.)
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to do the following:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, lift, carry, push, pull, bend, sit, climb, and stoop.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver bodies and equipment.
  • Ability to properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to wear provided personal protective equipment due to exposure to biohazardous and/or chemically hazardous materials
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Expert knowledge, skill, and ability in the use of digital cameras and photography equipment.
  • Knowledge and skill with forensic and medical photographic techniques.
  • Knowledge of forensic pathologists needs.
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal staff as well as community partners.
  • Ability to secure work area and maintain confidentiality.
WORK SCHEDULE:
  • This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and frequently required to work evenings.
