Forensic Technician

Salary: Hiring Salary: $20.65 Hourly

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Forensic Technician provides primary assistance to staff forensic pathologists with autopsy procedures and related activities. Specific duties include transporting the deceased between the morgue and autopsy room; lifting and transferring of the body between cart and table; preparing the body for autopsy; performing eviscerations, ensuring specimens are handled and stored appropriately and preparing the deceased’s body for the funeral home.

Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with autopsy duties, as appropriate and expected.
  • Maintains and operates various instruments and specialized autopsy equipment.
  • Collects forensic evidence and maintains chain of custody, as required.
  • Enters evidence information into the database.
  • Prepares bodies for postmortem examinations and release to funeral homes.
  • Washes, dries, measures, and positions bodies.
  • Prepares and preserves tissues and specimens.
  • Performs radiographic imaging of limited scope for identification and documentation purposes.
  • Cleans and disinfects the autopsy suite, equipment, tables, and instruments after each procedure.
  • Records information, completes forms, and enters/submits test orders.
  • Collects, packs, and ships microbiology and toxicology samples based on established guidelines.
  • Assists with educational activities and training of medical residents, pathology students, and other professionals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE:
  • Two (2) years of experience in allied health care and/or performing autopsies;
  • OR
  • Certificate-level training or an Associate Degree or Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program and one (1) year of experience in allied health care and/or performing autopsies;
  • OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Forensic Science, or related field in lieu of experience/certification.

  • Exposure to human remains, forensic instruments, pathogens, chemical or biological hazards, blood, and other body fluids is required.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Must pass a criminal background check, drug screen, and possess a valid Driver's License.
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to do the following:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, lift, carry, push, pull, bend, sit, climb, and stoop.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver bodies and equipment.
  • Ability to properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to wear provided personal protective equipment due to exposure to biohazardous and/or chemically hazardous materials
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Expert knowledge, skill, and ability in the use of digital cameras and photography equipment.
  • Knowledge and skill with forensic and medical photographic techniques.
  • Knowledge of forensic pathologists needs.
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal staff as well as community partners.
  • Ability to secure work area and maintain confidentiality.
WORK SCHEDULE:
  • This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and frequently required to work evenings.
