The Prince George's County Police Department is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill Laboratory Assistant I/II, grade P12/13 positions in the Forensic Science Division.

This is entry level technical and sub-professional work. The incumbent will provide support to the staff of the Forensic Science Division. Work is performed under general supervision. Work requires knowledge of Personnel Law, General Orders, Departmental policy and procedure and the ability to communicate well with others.

Duties

Examples of Work
  • Completes evidence in-take for the Forensic Science Division (FSD).
  • Chronicles evidence in the prescribed manner on the appropriate forms, to be legible accurate, factual, clear, concise, and acceptable in a court of law.
  • Handles incoming telephone calls in accordance with General Orders.
  • Completes forms, requisitions, and correspondence in both handwritten and typed formats.
  • Maintains written and typed logs for unit.
  • Coordinates transfer and security of physical evidence for criminal investigations with Detectives, Officers, Evidence and Property Division (EPD), Lab Staff and State’s Attorneys.
  • Processes items of evidence to collect and retain specific types of evidence, when needed.
  • Evaluates and assists all Units to secure FSD evidence, equipment, and facilities.
  • Uses available resources to assist laboratory staff in obtaining information needed to analyze evidence.
  • Coordinates evidence intake, submissions to lab staff, evidence pick up for court and the long-term storage of evidence, as needed.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description, however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • Three (3) months of laboratory experience or college level coursework in chemistry or other related physical science.
Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:
  • Pass a drug screening.
  • Pass a background investigation.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Be willing to adjust work schedule to include working Saturdays and Sundays
  • when required. Some position assignments will require shift work.
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • be willing to serve as an essential employee. This is an essential position. All essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
