The Property and Evidence Technician will work under the general supervision of Police Captains, Police Sergeants, and Police Records Supervisor and will receive, organize, preserve, secure, transport, release, and/or dispose of property and evidence confiscated by the Police Department. This position will help ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding property and evidence. Additionally, this position will testify in court regarding the chain of evidence and maintain record keeping systems related to property and evidence. The Property and Evidence Technician will perform related work as required. This is a non-exempt position in the Records Unit of Gilroy Police Department.

Duties

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL
  • Have experience in evidence/ property management, law enforcement, or related field.
  • Possess knowledge of federal and state Laws and court decisions pertaining to the recovery of property and evidence and preservation of the evidence chain.
  • Hold confidentiality in high regard and properly secure privileged information.
  • Be comfortable handling large sums of money, hazardous materials, firearms, and other unusual items following department procedures.
  • Be methodically detailed-oriented and organized while maintaining records and files.
  • Conduct regular audits and inventory of stored property.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively respond to phone calls and emails from the public, and to engage with law enforcement professionals across the criminal justice system.
  • Be technologically savvy and proficiently use MS Office Programs, radio equipment, and Records and Case Management Systems.
  • Be willing to learn new skills and attend a variety of meetings, conferences, and trainings pertaining to the property and evidence function and assist with developing and improving evidence management practices.
  • Demonstrate reliability and punctuality.
EXAMPLES OF FIRST YEAR PROJECTS
  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of existing evidence inventory to identify discrepancies and implement correction actions.
  • Collaborate with leadership to streamline evidence disposal processes, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Build relationships with law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, and community partners to enhance evidence-related workflows.
  • Develop and deliver training for department staff on property and evidence handling procedures.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED.
  • Two years of responsible support services work, preferably in a law enforcement environment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
  • Pass a background investigation, which includes a polygraph examination and an extensive Department of Justice criminal record check as well as an FBI clearance.
  • Pass a post-offer psychological evaluation and medical examination, which includes a drug test (includes testing for psychoactive marijuana metabolites).
  • Must be willing to work weekends, various shifts, and holidays.
  • Prefer non-tobacco user.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) desired, but not required.
