Crime Laboratory Analyst, Digital Evidence

Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Tampa, Florida

Salary: $55,620.00 per year. Experienced analysts with three or more years of testifying experience in the specific discipline in which they are hired may receive a starting salary between $58,620.00 - $63,620.00 per year.

Crime laboratory analysts conduct scientific analysis on physical evidence, author laboratory reports and provide expert testimony in criminal justice proceedings. Routine Digital Evidence activities include device repair and hardware-based data recovery methods; forensic data recovery and analysis of computers, mobile devices, and other digital storage media; reporting and testimony.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities vary depending on the discipline and position held, but may include:
  • Performing essential tasks to intake, examine and/or analyze physical evidence associated with criminal investigations;
  • Assisting with evaluating analytical methods and procedures;
  • Maintaining section equipment and logbooks, and performing various quality control checks;
  • Maintaining the laboratory, including cleaning work areas and equipment;
  • Maintaining integrity of evidence and chain of custody; and
  • Preparing reports that are technically accurate and are supported by the case record information.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited college or university with completion of at least 15 credit hours in science-related coursework, computer engineering, computer science, computer forensics, physics, or mathematics graded at a “C” or better;
  • or a bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited college or university and two years of work experience in the area of digital investigations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques used in the analysis of physical evidence as it applies to the forensic laboratory;
  • Knowledge of the procedure for packaging, handling and preserving evidence;
  • Skill in the use of scientific laboratory equipment;
  • Ability to analyze results, formulate conclusions and present findings verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to give sworn testimony as an expert witness in court; and
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
