Evidence and Logistics Technician

Salary: $46,423.79 per year

This role performs a variety of critical responsibilities and administrative duties within the Property and Evidence Unit, serving as the department’s Evidence Custodian. Additional responsibilities include serving as the department’s logistics coordinator and procuring and managing equipment to support daily operations. This non-sworn civilian position reports directly to the Chief of Police.

Duties

  • Maintains the chain of custody and integrity of evidence and property.
  • Receives, records, manages storage systems, safeguards, collects, loads, transports, verifies, releases, and disburses evidence.
  • Maintains tracking of found or abandoned property.
  • Manages the property tracking systems of the Kitty Hawk Police Department.
  • Manage all evidence in-house and track any items removed and returned accordingly.
  • Assists with initiating inquiries on property and evidence to obtain information on ownership, release, and disposition.
  • Responsible for packaging and storing firearms, narcotics, and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Responsible for packaging and storing valuable property such as jewelry and U.S. Currency.
  • Prepares property and evidence for shipment and/or transport to crime labs and other destinations as needed.
  • Works with all agency personnel to properly package and log evidence, obtain dispositions, and obtain evidence destruction orders.
  • Responsible for the proper disposition of all property in accordance with departmental policy, law, and court orders.
  • Conducts mandated inspections of inventory and the evidence room. Ensures security systems and equipment are operating properly
  • Provides general information regarding departmental activities and programs to citizens.
  • Manage the procurement process, obtain quotes, and order equipment or supplies as needed.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with vendors.
  • Track purchases, deliveries, and shipments.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all departmental supplies and equipment.
  • Conduct cost analysis of purchases and shipments and identify savings opportunities.
  • Performs general administrative functions to support the team.
  • Works closely with the Administrative Records Technician and provides backup for breaks and vacations as needed.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience in a role that includes asset management and logistical tracking, reporting, and a high level of administrative support. Law enforcement experience would be beneficial but is not required.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Law Enforcement Technology Systems
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to operate a multi-line telephone.
  • Ability to manage several tasks at one time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, coworkers, and the public.
  • Skill in the operation of standard office equipment
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to create and manage databases.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in logistics software and systems for order management, inventory, and tracking.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina purchasing laws and regulations.
Special Requirements
  • Currently has or can obtain a North Carolina Driver’s license.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be certified as a Division of Criminal Information (DCI) operator within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must be certified as a Notary Public within the first six (6) months of employment
