Duties

Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner I
  • Keeps the mission, vision and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Responds to crime scenes as required to locate, identify, document, record, recover and process as necessary all items of evidentiary value using the latest accepted scientific and technological methods and equipment documenting such activity in written reports.
  • Assists in maintaining all latent print evidence and files, and crime related data.
  • Coordinates, prepares findings, and participates in other court proceedings as required.
  • Processes latent print; prepares, analyzes and packages evidence; prepares reports.
  • Responds to law enforcement, local, state and federal agencies’ inquiries concerning latent print evidence and related data.
  • Utilizes chemicals, powders, and physical methods for detection and visualization of latent prints using proper safety equipment and procedures.
  • Compares latent prints with a suspect’s know inked prints to determine probable cause.
  • Prepares detailed reports and documentation regarding crime scene analysis and evidence collection.
  • Assists in training relating to latent fingerprinting and crime scene analysis for Crime Scene Investigators and law enforcement personnel.
  • Coordinates and conducts presentations as required.
  • May fingerprint persons, using ink pads, specialized tools for deceased persons and electronic recording methods.
  • May photograph and transfer residual fingerprints from objects, such as weapons or drinking glasses, to record cards, using standard technique.
  • Photographs crime scenes, including fatal auto accidents.
  • Works closely with patrol officers, detectives, the State Attorney's office, local and state crime laboratory personnel, and the Medical Examiner’s office.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the latest crime scene techniques and available resources.
  • Exercises good judgment, high standards of practice and ethical conduct.
  • Crime Scene Investigator will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of friction skin physiology and morphology, terminology, detection, recovery, photography, preservation, enhancement, analysis, comparison, documentation and reporting of latent print evidence.
  • Examine and compare latent print evidence, as well as providing expert testimony when necessary.
  • Use all scientific and investigative techniques at their command to ascertain significant facts relevant to the matters under investigation.
  • Crime Scene Investigator will be guided by best practices and procedures which are generally recognized within the profession.
  • Makes appropriate computer entries as required in active case work and searches various databases in fingerprint comparisons for identifications.
  • Maintain a level of professional knowledge and expertise through periodic training, proficiency testing, journals, or literature reviews in the Crime Scene & Latent Print Examiner profession.

Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner II

  • Assists in maintaining all latent print evidence and files, and crime related data.

  • Monitors and directs the use of equipment to ensure quality of staff output and ensures that the most effective and efficient methods are utilized.
  • Acts as the lead for the unit; provides technical assistance and advises staff on complex problems and situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner I-
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related crime scene applicable field, and a minimum of four (4) years’ experience with a law enforcement agency required, one (1) year of which must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.;
  • OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree and a minimum of six (6) years of experience with a law enforcement agency, two (2) years of which must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.;
  • OR
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and a minimum of eight (8) years of experience with a law enforcement agency required, three (3) years of which must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.
Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner II-
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, or related crime scene applicable field and a minimum of six (6) years’ experience with a law enforcement agency, of which two (2) years’ experience must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.;
  • OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree required and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience with a law enforcement agency required, of which, three (3) years’ experience must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.;
  • OR
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalency diploma required and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience with a law enforcement agency required, of which, four (4) years’ experience must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.
Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner III-
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science or related crime scene applicable field and a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience with a law enforcement agency required, of which, five (5) years’ must be analyzing and comparing latent print evidence within a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner I-
  • Certification from the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Latent Print Examiner or Crime Scene certification at any level or the equivalent amount of years of experience to obtain the certification per the IAI required. Certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Possession of valid Florida Driver’s License and maintenance of a clean driving record required.
Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner II-
  • Certification from the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Certified Latent Print Examiner and Crime Scene Analyst required. Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Certified Crime Scene Analyst with two (2) years’ experience in crime scene duties required.
  • Possession of valid Florida Driver’s License and maintenance of a clean driving record required.
Crime Scene Investigator/Latent Print Examiner III-
  • Certification from the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Certified Latent Print Examiner required. Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst with six (6) years’ experience in crime scene duties required.
  • Possession of valid Florida Driver’s License and maintenance of a clean driving record required.
