The Public Safety Property Supervisory is a Career Service employee within the Aurora Police Department. The primary function is to plan, organize, coordinate and supervise the Property and Evidence Unit, performing various supervisor functions to support the operations of the Aurora Police Department.

Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervising job duties, including conducting performance evaluations, prioritizing and assigning work, coordinating training activities, and making recommendations on hiring, termination, and disciplinary actions
  • Supervise, coordinate and review the work of the Property and Evidence Unit
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, review, and participate in the Property and Evidence activities
  • Respond to court orders concerning evidence
  • Review evidence or other material for disposal and conduct periodic evidence destruction in compliance with department procedures, state and federal laws, and as authorized
  • Monitor and ensure property and evidence is handled in compliance with established policies and procedures and laws
  • Coordinate assigned activities with other departments, divisions, law enforcement agencies, the courts and the general public
  • Required to work varied hours and days to include being on-call to respond
  • Coordinate the viewings of evidence for district attorneys, defense attorneys, etc. as requested to include inventory of case evidence
  • Maintain and supervise the destruction inventory lists for firearms, drugs, money and auctions including counting and then the transfer of monies to the city cashier
  • Ascertain whether proper paperwork has been submitted prior to destruction
  • Instruct and train others on-the-job regarding evidence handling and computer protocols
  • Coordinates the submittal and transportation of evidence to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and other agencies as necessary
  • May have to provide after hours on-call assistance in the collection of evidence and the transporting of over-sized items.
  • Submits and coordinates the transport of evidence for laboratory analysis or court.
  • Submit reports and paperwork
  • May be required to assist in the writing of policy and SOP's
  • Interpretation of how policies are implemented
  • Discussions and support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues
  • Follow established standard operating procedures and/or policies
  • Comprehensive and practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Conducts inventories and participates in audits
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
  • Associates Degree business administration, warehouse and inventory management, or directly related field
  • Experience in Evidence Vault may be substituted for college credits
Experience:
  • Four (4) years of administrative support experience
  • Two (2) years’ work-related experience in Inventory Control Warehousing
  • Including one (1) year in a law enforcement environment
Licenses and Certifications:
  • CCIC/NCIC certification preferred, but also required within 6 months of employment
  • Driver License with clean Motor Vehicle Report
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in a management or lead position
  • Municipal government or law enforcement environment experience
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of inventory control
  • Evidence chain of command
Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills
  • Skill in the use of office equipment, personal computers and software applications related to assigned function
Abilities:
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member
  • Ability to stay current in updated computer software updates
  • Ability to read, interpret, and explain documents such as city policies, procedures, local, state and federal laws and ordinances
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Ability to apply common sense

Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
  • Heavy physical work requiring the ability to lift 100 pounds with or without assistance
  • Ability to remove and place property items up to 14’ off the ground with the use of a ladder or scissor lift
  • Frequent carrying objects 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequent lift and carrying; pushing, pulling and bending; climbing up ladders; walking and standing (up and down stairs)
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard
  • Vision to read and interpret reports, documents and other written information
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
  • Critical thinking to navigate technical tasks
  • Judgment to ensure confidential information remains protected
Work Environment:
  • This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions, hazardous waste, biological fluids, infectious diseases, narcotics, firearms, drug paraphernalia, noxious fumes, blood and airborne pathogens
  • Occasion exposure to explosive components and chemicals from illegal drug manufacturing
  • Exposure to moderate noise
Equipment Used:
  • Some operation of motor vehicles to transport property and evidence
  • Operation of a scissor lift jack
  • Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, copiers and other office equipment
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
