Salary: $48,380.80 - $66,497.60 Annually. Auto-promotion up to $91,333 annually.

The Sheriff's Department, Scientific Investigations Division, is recruiting for Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists I who will learn to collect, document, and preserve physical evidence at crime scenes; maintain related equipment and instruments; and complete case reports. This is the trainee level in the series (Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist I, II, III); incumbents work under immediate supervision while receiving training and acquiring the knowledge and skills required for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist II (up to $84,822 Annually).

Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Collects, preserves, and transports all types of physical evidence from crime scenes, such as trace, biological, firearm, impression, bomb/arson, entomological, and other general types of evidence for laboratory analysis according to ASCLD/LAB and Department/Division policies.
  • Locates, develops, and collects latent fingerprints using various chemicals, materials, instruments, and computer systems.
  • Takes photographs of all types of crimes scene evidence using a variety of photographic equipment, techniques, materials, and procedures.
  • Participate in and observe crime scene reconstruction, including analyzing and interpreting bloodstain patterns and gunshot trajectories to determine circumstances and sequence of events leading up to death; uses tire and shoe tracking techniques to support reconstruction efforts.
  • Assists in gravesite excavations and the recovery of skeletal remains with other forensic professionals (e.g., deputy coroner or forensic anthropologists); attends post mortem examinations, collects pathological samples and evidence for lab analysis.
  • Collects sexual assault evidence from decedents at crime scenes, which includes completing a "sexual assault kit" on male or female victims.
  • Maintains lab equipment, safety equipment, and analytical instruments; uses standard office equipment regularly and helps with basic maintenance.
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness.
  • Receives, stores, and releases property and evidence obtained from crime scenes; transfers evidence, while maintaining integrity, to and from storage.
  • Writes reports of crime scene findings, including any technical processing, correspondence, and any other work related to a case.
  • Performs serial number restoration on guns, machinery, tools, and bicycles using various chemical mixtures.
  • Responds promptly to time-sensitive incidents by driving either a personal or county vehicle to remote or distant locations as required, ensuring timely resolution and support based on the nature and urgency of the situation.
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

  • Option A - Experience: One (1) year of full-time work experience with a law enforcement agency processing evidence at or from crime scenes. Experience must include technical processing, collecting, or photographing of evidence. Note: Property and evidence storage is not considered qualifying.
  • -- OR --
  • Option B - Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in criminalistics, forensics, or a related physical or natural science, which includes at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units from courses in crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and college-level mathematics (trigonometry is preferred). A list of completed college coursework or transcripts must be submitted with the application.
