Crime Scene Specialist II

Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Collects, preserves, and transports all types of physical evidence from crime scenes, such as trace, biological, firearm, impression, bomb/arson, entomological, and other general types of evidence for laboratory analysis according to ASCLD/LAB and Department/Division policies.
• Locates, develops, and collects latent fingerprints using various chemicals, materials, instruments, and computer systems.
• Takes photographs of all types of crimes scene evidence using a variety of photographic equipment, techniques, materials, and procedures.
• Participate in and observe crime scene reconstruction, including analyzing and interpreting bloodstain patterns and gunshot trajectories to determine circumstances and sequence of events leading up to death; uses tire and shoe tracking techniques to support reconstruction efforts.
• Assists in gravesite excavations and the recovery of skeletal remains with other forensic professionals (e.g., deputy coroner or forensic anthropologists); attends post mortem examinations, collects pathological samples and evidence for lab analysis.
• Collects sexual assault evidence from decedents at crime scenes, which includes completing a "sexual assault kit" on male or female victims.
• Maintains lab equipment, safety equipment, and analytical instruments; uses standard office equipment regularly and helps with basic maintenance.
• Testifies in court as an expert witness.
• Receives, stores, and releases property and evidence obtained from crime scenes; transfers evidence, while maintaining integrity, to and from storage.
• Writes reports of crime scene findings, including any technical processing, correspondence, and any other work related to a case.
• Performs serial number restoration on guns, machinery, tools, and bicycles using various chemical mixtures.
• Responds promptly to time-sensitive incidents by driving either a personal or county vehicle to remote or distant locations as required, ensuring timely resolution and support based on the nature and urgency of the situation.
• Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Experience:

• One (1) year of full-time work experience with a law enforcement agency with primary responsibility for crime scene investigations that includes processing latent fingerprints, collecting, documenting, and photographing evidence at crime scenes. (All qualifying experience must be obtained in the field at crime scenes.)

Education:

• Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in criminalistics, forensics, or a related physical or natural science, which includes at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units from courses in crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and college-level mathematics (trigonometry is preferred). A list of completed college coursework or transcripts must be submitted with the application.

Substitution:

• One (1) year of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
