Deputy Coroner

Salary: $55,387.00 - $71,992.00 Annually

Final Filing Date: Continuous

The purpose of this position is to investigate and determine the cause and manner of death in all unattended deaths within Beaufort County. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties

Examples of Duties
  • Performs autopsies/body exams, including history taking, interviews with investigators, family, and or police and medical chart review.
  • Reviews and corrects report dictation.
  • Performs and formulates on-call and scene investigation/triage decisions.
  • Communicates with police, court, and family members.
  • Generates death certificates.
  • Packs and labels toxicology, histology, and evidence items.
  • Reviews, approves, and records cremation requests.
  • Participates in quality control, assessment, and improvement activities.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
  • Over six months and up to and including one year of related experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
