Position Description
  • The City of Fresno is currently recruiting for a Senior Crime Scene Technician. Under general supervision, incumbent provides lead direction to technicians engaged in the processing of crime scenes and evidence; the comparison of latent prints used in the prosecution of criminals; and operates automated fingerprint identification systems.
  • On an assigned shift, an incumbent may assign and direct the work of subordinate technicians and other assistants in the Police Department's Crime Scene Investigation Bureau. The incumbent will provide lead direction in the investigation and processing of crime scene evidence; including photography, fingerprints, handling and evaluating evidence, report writing, collecting and preserving evidence. Incumbents also perform the more complex tasks associated with the operation of multiple AFIS systems (Automated Fingerprint Identification System).
  • Successful candidates must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions and be capable of working in intense and graphic conditions that may occur in crime scenes. Incumbents will be assigned to work a ten-hour shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The current vacancy exists in the Fresno Police Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Crime Scene Technician with the Fresno Police Department, two (2) years of which must have been as a Crime Scene Technician II.
  • OR
  • Three (3) years of experience with a law enforcement crime lab or identification unit and completion of thirty (30) college units from an accredited college or university, which includes fifteen (15) semester units within the fields of criminal justice or law enforcement. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Additional Requirements
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver's license at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
  • Eligibles certified for consideration for the position will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
  • Eligible candidates will be required to complete a detailed pre-employment personal history form, followed by a thorough background investigation which will include a polygraph examination or computer voice stress analyzer test.
