Forensic Scientist Manager

Salary: $73,096.00 - $102,443.00 Annually

This position has been given the overall responsibility and authority to direct and organize the Forensic Biology Section to maximize the overall efficiency and effectiveness of Forensic Scientists and resources available. This position incorporates supervisory and administrative functions which must be performed daily in a professional manner in the Crime Laboratory community. Further, this position is responsible for ensuring the overall work performed by the Forensic Scientists of the section is conducted in an efficient and timely manner. The accurateness and completeness of this information is ultimately the responsibility of the supervisor of the section. Periodic reviews must be conducted each month to determine the status of each Forensic Scientist’s workload, quality of work and timeliness in responding to submitting agencies.

Duties

  • This position must be able to communicate with local, state and federal officers, district attorneys and other law enforcement officials in the state and other jurisdictions throughout the country. Court officials and investigators rely on the technical data and advice provided by the supervisor to build cases.
  • This position must be well versed on criminal justice procedures and criminal law to adequately advise officers inquiring for proper procedures and guidance. Prepares comprehensive and detailed reports pertaining to individual cases and applies the principles, techniques and procedures for modern criminal investigations.
  • This position must, at times, perform all duties of a Forensic Scientist including technical analyses, court testimony and technical field assistance.
  • This position will oversee all aspects of inspections, accreditation proceedings and annual audits conducted on the section. This process will involve ensuring the section is meeting or exceeding all approved standards set forth by the governing body.
  • Some travel, including some overnight stays are required.
  • Selected candidate will undergo a background and records check.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINUMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, animal science, zoology, medical technology or closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution including coursework in biochemistry, genetic, molecular biology, statistics and population genetics -AND- eight years of experience performing bench level analysis in forensic biology;
  • -OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
  • Must obtain individual certification consistent with international and ISO standards within eighteen months of the date the analyst becomes eligible to seek certification according to the standards of the certifying entity.
PREFERENCE
  • Prior experience supervising/managing a team of scientists performing forensic DNA analysis.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
  • Ability to perform and record complex standardized and non-standardized laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze results and interpret methodology and to understand and solve theoretical problems.
  • Ability to express technical information clearly both orally and in writing when reporting results, testifying or explaining procedures to others.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perceive colors normally and make olfactory distinctions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinates.
