Salary: $77,082.64 - $90,572.11 Annually

The Metro Nashville Police Department Crime Lab Forensic Scientist 3 – Forensic Biology Unit position shall be directly accountable to the MNPD Crime Laboratory Forensic Scientist Supervisor - Forensic Biology Unit for laboratory analyses and related duties.

Duties

  • Performs chemical, microscopic, and immunological tests on physical evidence.
  • Interprets and evaluates serological results and DNA data.
  • Performs validations on new equipment and procedures.
  • Conducts performance checks, recalibrations, and maintains records of laboratory equipment.
  • Conducts quality control testing on reagents and supplies.
  • Maintains technical forensic laboratory files and records of findings.
  • Prepares analytical reports and effectively communicates results of analyses.
  • Conducts technical and/or administrative reviews on scientific reports.
  • Provides expert testimony in court based on laboratory findings.
  • Maintains and demonstrates efficiency in the field of Serology/DNA.
  • Acts as backup DNA Technical Leader.
  • Assists with the training of forensic technicians and less experienced examiners under direction of supervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Executes applicable operations of the laboratory information management system (LIMS).

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors’ degree in a biology, chemistry, forensic science, or related area and shall have successfully completed 12 semester or equivalent credit hours from a combination of undergraduate and graduate coursework covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics or population genetics;
  • -AND- five (5) years of experience in Forensic Biology casework, including three (3) years as a qualified analyst on DNA forensic samples, in an accredited scientific laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science or related area
  • Knowledge of and experience in using related laboratory instrumentation, computer software, calibration, validation, quality control, safety, accreditation, proficiency testing, and training
  • Knowledge of international forensic laboratory accreditation standards
