Police Evidence Technician

Salary: $34,278.40 - $61,755.20 Annually

An employee in this job class is responsible for ensuring the documentation of the proper chain of custody when receiving, securing and returning any physical evidence submitted to the Property Control Unit. Work also involves general clerical duties (i.e., answering telephone inquiries, typing and maintaining various records and files and related duties as designated by the Property Control Unit). An employee in this position may be exposed to contaminated evidence (i.e., toxic chemicals, noxious odors and controlled substances, etc.) while handling submitted evidence. Work is performed independently but under the general supervision of the Property Control Unit.

Duties

  • Properly document the receipt, signature and weighing of necessary evidence received at the front counter.
  • Enters receipts into the Property Control Unit system.
  • Properly document the return of any evidence to submitting agencies or municipalities.
  • Provide direction to officers and detectives as to procedures for properly packaging evidence and completion of evidence receipts.
  • Make file folders and file all evidence receipts and completed paperwork and casework.
  • Locate and pull evidence for upcoming court cases.
  • Pull files, make copies and fax reports to officers, Prosecuting Attorney's Office, County Counselor's Office, Probation and Parole, Family Court and other agencies that request the completed reports.
  • Locate, pull and prepare complete case files for microfilming.
  • Assist in coordinating drug, gun burns and police auction.
  • Perform clerical duties as requested by the Property Control Unit Supervisor.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide assistance as required, and direct calls to appropriate personnel, when necessary.
  • Distribute mail (U.S. Postal and inter-departmental) delivered to Property Control Unit.
  • Oversee maintenance of copier.
  • Performs other duties, as directed.
  • Perform Precinct and Units/Bureau evidence pick-ups at the Supervisor’s discretion.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Education
  • Graduation from high school.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and proficient typing skills.
  • Knowledge or the ability to learn and make use of Department databases such as CARE and Case Management.
  • Knowledge or the ability to learn and conduct searches for people or property after training and REJIS testing/certification for database access.
  • Knowledge of office methods, procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge or the ability to learn Property Control Unit procedures in the handling of physical evidence.
  • Knowledge in the use of safety equipment (i.e., protective eyewear, latex gloves, lab coats, etc.).
  • Skill to communicate in proper English with written and oral methods.
  • Skill to communicate and interact effectively with law enforcement officials, attorneys and court personnel and the public.
  • Skill to handle any physical evidence in a safe manner using protocol and safety procedures.
  • Skill to effectively use cleaning solutions in the work area according to manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Skill to alphabetize, transport, file and purge records and documents, as needed.
  • Skill to type computer records or written assignments with limited errors.
  • Ability to handle safety procedures used in an emergency situation (i.e., chemical spills, fires, exposures, etc.).
  • Ability to converse with law enforcement officials, attorneys and the general public in a tactful manner over the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to learn the Property Control Unit computer system, operate printers, copy machines, shredders and calculators.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professional integrity while dealing with extremely sensitive information or evidence.
  • Ability to maintain confidential clerical records and files.
  • Ability to testify in court on a witness stand and to present all the facts for depositions, while maintaining composure under intense defense cross-examination scrutiny.
  • Ability to make sound decisions pertaining to Property Control Unit office procedures involving the handling of evidence.
  • Ability to transport, store and retrieve articles or evidence from the proper storage facilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relations with others.
  • Ability to route telephone calls and mail to the appropriate Property Control Unit personnel.
  • Ability to effectively use the emergency alarm system.
  • Ability to work hours as assigned.
  • Ability to lift heavy items to include box truck tailgate.
  • Ability to drive large box truck and panel van.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Availability to work overtime if necessary.
