Fingerprint Examiner

Salary: $3,179.00 Monthly

Under direct supervision, is responsible for classifying, researching, identifying, and confirms the identity of individuals accused of offenses or those that are deceased. Researches local, state, and federal criminal histories files to validate existing records or verify identity. Fingerprints Sheriff's Office, other County applicants, public, and sex offender registration via automated or manual means. Files and retrieves fingerprint cards using the Henry classification system. Trains other Sheriff's Office staff and outside agencies on fingerprinting and classification methods. Provides testimony in court proceedings on identification matters. Performs related duties as directed.

Duties

  • Utilizing automated (Livescan) and manual procedures captures, classifies and compares, and subsequently identifies fingerprint cards of individuals booked into the Adult Detention Center, Central Magistration, and Courthouse
  • Researches the Bexar County Criminal Justice System (CJIS), Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC), and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) for criminal history information and active warrants on individuals booked
  • Updates the Bexar County Master Name file and local criminal history folder with information obtained through research or provided by individuals placed in custody
  • Maintains the master fingerprint file by using the methods described in the Henry Classification System. Utilizing the NCIC and IAFIS references as supporting means of identification
  • Research and processes Expungement Orders as issued by the Courts under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Chapter 55
  • Maintains Juvenile information as required by the Texas Family Code, Chapter 58
  • Fingerprints applicants for the Sheriff's Office and other County Agencies for criminal history information
  • Obtains fingerprints for submission to State and Federal agencies of Sex Offenders registering with the Sheriff's Office
  • Operates general office equipment, i.e., telefax, copiers, personal computers, and printers
  • Provides testimony in judicial proceeding in the County, District, and Federal Courts in areas of criminal records and identification matters
  • Primary individual to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the Automated Fingerprint Identifications System (AFIS) workstations
  • Represents the Sheriff's Office on intergovernmental committees regarding criminal records and identification issues
  • Performs related duties as required

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School graduate or General Education Development (GED) certificate and one (1) year of experience in fingerprint identification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Livescan operation, operator maintenance and troubleshooting; knowledge of general office procedures and the ability to operate personal computer and basic office equipment
  • Ability to learn fingerprint comparison and verification techniques, maintain exceptionally high skill levels of fingerprint patterns and shapes to properly classify, research and identify individuals; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other governmental agencies, inmates, co-workers, other County Employees and the public
  • Must possess or successfully complete within one year of hire date, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Fingerprint Classification and Fingerprint Identification courses
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • Weekend and Shift work is required of this position
Physical Requirements
  • Physical requirements include lifting/carrying of 5 – 10 pounds occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to climbing, pushing, handling, walking, sitting, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential functions
  • Working conditions are in an office within a jail environment
